The Neurophysics Group of Jordi Soriano-Fradera studies collective phenomena in neuronal cultures, i.e. tissue from the cortex or hippocampus that is dissociated and plated on cover glasses.

Our research is oriented towards the understanding of the mechanisms that originate and maintain spontaneous activity, the relation between this activity and the underpinned circuitry, and the resilience of this activity to physical damage or chemical perturbations.

In our lab we use a multi-culture platform to simultaneously prepare different cultures. Their activity is monitored through high-resolution, high-speed calcium imaging, finally procuring the individual traces of thousands of neurons whose analysis sheds light on the collective mechanisms shaping neuronal network activity.

Jordi Soriano is currently Ramón-y-Cajal researcher within the "Talented Researchers Programme" at the University of Barcelona.

Recent Activity

- December 8th, 2014. Jordi has described the research in the group at the school "Nonlinearity and Stochasticity in Emergent Phenomena", held at the 'Instituto de Ciencias Físicas de la UNAM' (Cuernavaca, Mexico), from November 25th to December 5th.

- October 24th, 2014. Jordi has presented the research in the lab at the "Centro de Tecnológia Biomédica", Madrid.

- October 20th, 2014. An interdisciplinary consortium for the study of Huntington disease,  in which our group participates providing tools to measure neuronal activity in 'in vitro' networks, has received a research grant from "La Mataró" to deepen in the understanding and treatment of this disorder. The consortium is integrated by physicians, biologists, and physicists. The PI of the project is Prof. Jordi Alberch Vié.

- September 29th, 2014. Jordi has presented an overview of the reserach in the lab at the Brain and Stem Institute, Paris.

- September 15th, 2014. The results of our 'Connectomics Challenge' has been presented in Nancy, France, in a special session within the European Conference on Machine Learning. Both organizers and participants met in the conference, and discussed the outcome of the Challenge and future directions. Get the Conference Proceedings here.

- September 9th, 2014: Our manuscript "Emergence of assortative mixing between clusters of cultured neurons" has been published in PLoS Computational Biology! Get the paper here.
